Demerol

Demerol is a drug used to control pain and Demerol is also known as meperidine. Demerol is the brand name for meperidine which is a member of the opioids drug class. Other Opioids that are similar to Demerol include morphine, codeine, heroin, Vicodin, Dilaudid and OxyContin among others. This is a very powerful class of drugs known as narcotics and Demerol is only available by prescription and its distribution is highly controlled. Often used in surgery, Demerol is used for its pain-relieving effects. Like heroin and morphine, Demerol attaches to opioid receptors found in the spinal column and brain to interfere with the transmission of pain.

Demerol is available in a pill and in a syrup. It is prescribed for moderate to serious pain and reduces pain for up to 4 hours. Users of Demerol often feel euphoria as the drug triggers the brains pleasure centers as well as blocking pain. Other physical effects include:

Dizziness
Lowered blood pressure
Shallow breathing
Sedation
Nausea
Disorientation
Dry mouth
Itchiness
Sweating
Constipation
Skin rash

Other serious physical effects of Demerol include respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, hallucinations and severe convulsions. Physical addiction is also highly likely if Demerol is used for more than a couple of weeks in which case withdrawal symptoms will be felt if Demerol is stopped. Withdrawal symptoms of Demerol dependence include insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, restlessness, and severe flu-like symptoms such as muscle and bone pain and cold flashes.

Physical dependence can often be a precursor to a very serious addiction. Addiction to Demerol is characterized by the National Institute of Drug Abuse very simply as having a compulsive, uncontrollable desire to use Demerol or other drugs. This desire persists despite negative physical and mental consequences. The desire persists despite having to resort to illegal activities to get more Demerol or other opiates. Creating reasons to visit the emergency room, forging and changing prescriptions to increase the amount of Demerol and visiting different pharmacies to go undetected are all behaviors that indicate a serious addiction.

Scripts has been treating addiction to opiates like Demerol for many years. We have drawn on our years of experience to create a specialized treatment program exclusively dedicated to treating those suffering from prescription dependency. Treatment begins with a physical evaluation from our in-house physician who will give recovery a head start by making sure that the withdrawal period is as comfortable as possible. This detoxification process is necessary in order to clear the mind to focus on new behaviors. Our licensed counseling staff will prepare an individualized treatment plan that will address the clients particular needs. Scripts have been effectively using cognitive-behavioral intervention to help alter clients behaviors beyond depending on drugs to solve problems.

Another effective element of the Scripts program is the dedication of a separate facility to only serve prescription drug dependency. Our research has found that clients who are with other clients with similar problems feel less isolation and shame. The faster an individual can deal with negative feelings the faster recovery can begin.

To top it off the prescription facility is located on the beach side cliff on one of Southern California's most exclusive shores. Private rooms are available on a first-come-first-serve basis and this luxurious treatment facility fills up quickly so please give us a call today if you want to deal with dependence on Demerol and/or other prescription medications.
