Codeine

Codeine is a narcotic and codeine is correctly classified with other drugs such as heroin, Demerol and morphine. Codeine is a natural part of opium but is now widely manufactured synthetically. Used to treat pain and in syrup as a cough suppressant, codeine is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. For many people it is an effective prescription that they'll use to treat their symptoms but for others codeine can be a powerful substance that can take over life. Codeine is a Schedule II drug that is often found on the black market after it has been diverted from legitimate sources such as pharmacies and doctors offices.

Many people who begin to take codeine for a persistent cough or moderate pain find themselves continuing to seek renewal on the prescription and will often go to great lengths for it. It is not unusual for people to forge and change prescriptions in an attempt to get more codeine. Some people will call in fake prescriptions to pharmacies, buy other peoples prescriptions or buy pills straight off the street in the black market.

Codeine blocks the pain receptors in the brain and spine and rewards the brains pleasure centers giving the user a euphoric high. It is this high that people who are susceptible to addiction find hard to resist. The pleasure associated with codeine use can lead to all sorts of legal, physical and emotional troubles in addition to hurting the pocketbook. The pleasure from a codeine high is used for comfort in stressful situations, to relax, to forget troubles, for emotional pain and to escape from the days problems.

Physical symptoms can be a warning of codeine dependence. Continuous scratching, constipation, nausea and blurry vision are all signs that the body has taken in too much codeine. Physical withdrawal symptoms that are experienced when the body feels the effects of a lack of codeine include muscle and bone pain, runny nose, headache, cold sweats and insomnia among others. These withdrawal symptoms indicate that the body has become physically dependent on codeine and it is helpful to have a doctors supervision during this period of recovery.
